Five things that make cleaning a denture or retainer easier

Small, mostly free changes for a nightly job most people rush. We sell one of the five, and it is number two.

A matte black cleaning pod with its clear lid open and a denture resting in softly lit water.
Number one on the list costs nothing. Number two is this small cleaning pod, and it is ours.

Cleaning a denture or a retainer happens every night and rarely gets much thought. It comes out at the end of the day, gets a quick rinse or a soak in a cup, and goes back in next morning. Film builds up a little at a time.

Below are five things that make it simpler, in the order we would try them. Most are habits rather than purchases: they cost nothing, and you can start tonight. One of them is a product we sell, and it is marked as ours where it appears.

Rinse it as soon as it comes out

Free

Run it under cool water the moment it comes out, before it goes anywhere else. Film and bits are easiest to lift while they are still wet, and a few seconds now saves scrubbing later.

It costs nothing and works with any routine, a plain cup and tablet included. If you only take one thing from this list, take this one.

An ultrasonic pod for the nightly soak

This one is ours.

$69.99, ships free

This one is ours, so read it with that in mind. It is a small round pod with a clear lid that turns the nightly soak into one button.

Add water and a cleaning tablet, drop the denture or retainer into the basket, close the lid and press start. Vibration fills the water with tiny bubbles that loosen the day's film, and you can often watch the water cloud. There are three timer settings, and it switches itself off.

It is not a brush and it is not a dentist. Plain water alone does noticeably less, so it works best with a tablet in the water and a quick brush after.

Ours is the DailyEase Ultrasonic Denture & Retainer Cleaner. It is $69.99 and ships free.

Brush it with a soft brush made for it

A few dollars for a brush

A soft denture or retainer brush and a non-abrasive cleaner reach the corners a soak alone can miss. Regular toothpaste is gritty and can dull the surface over time, so most care guides suggest skipping it here.

A brush costs a few dollars, and it helps with any routine, ours included.

Use the soaking tablets you already have

Free, if they are already in the cabinet

If there is a box of denture or retainer tablets in the cabinet, keep using it. A tablet in a cup of water still does a good overnight job on its own.

It matters for us too. Our pod works noticeably better with a tablet in the water than with plain water, so the tablets you own are never wasted.

Give the routine one spot by the sink

Free

Keep the case, the brush and the tablets together by the sink. Then it is one easy minute instead of a hunt each night.

If you are setting this up for someone you love, do it together once on a visit. From then on it is their routine to run.

We ordered two of these cleaning machines and both work really well. No abrasive cleaning required, just filtered or distilled water and a mild solution of oral cleansing solution or dish washing soap. Cleaned my electric toothbrush heads beautifully.

Everything is fine, very practical and does its job... it's bigger in person than it looks in the photos.

Four of these five cost nothing or close to it: the rinse, the soft brush, the tablets you own, and one spot by the sink.

If the nightly soak is the part you want to hand to a button, item two is ours, at $69.99, and it ships free.
