How to choose

  • Motion-sensing or always on

    Motion-sensing lights come on as you approach and switch themselves off, so nothing is left burning. Always-on or touch-controlled lights stay where you set them. Sensors suit hallways and landings, manual control suits a bedside.

  • Plug-in or battery

    Plug-in lights never need charging but have to live near an outlet. Battery and rechargeable lights go anywhere, including inside a cupboard or under a bed, at the cost of remembering to charge them.

  • Placement and brightness

    For moving around at night, a lower, warmer light at floor level is usually easier on the eyes than a bright overhead. Think about where the light needs to fall rather than how bright the product is.
