A little help choosing

How to choose

  • Lens size and magnification

These pull against each other. Higher magnification usually means a smaller lens and a shorter working distance, so you hold it closer and see less at once. A larger lens at lower magnification is easier for reading along a line of text.

  • Light is half the job

Magnification without light often disappoints. A lit lens usually does more for small print than a stronger lens in a dim room, so look at the lighting as carefully as the magnification number.

  • How you will hold it

Handheld suits short bursts such as a label or a price. A stand or hands-free option suits longer sessions such as reading, needlework or a crossword.
